02 / The fraternity

History of Freemasonry

Freemasonry grew from the traditions of stonemasons and developed into a fraternity centered on moral teaching, fellowship, and charitable service. The formation of the Grand Lodge of England in 1717 is a major milestone in the history of modern organized Freemasonry.

As the fraternity spread across the Atlantic, Masonic lodges became part of community life in America. Alabama's Grand Lodge was established in 1821, and local lodges have since served communities throughout the state.

What brings Brothers together?

Freemasonry asks members to practice integrity, care for others, and keep learning. Three Lodge committees help shape that work in Lillian:

Education Committee. Creates engaging ways for our Brotherhood to learn about Masonic history and our roles as men.

Shepherding Committee. Works to grow membership and stay connected with Brothers who live nearby and those who live at a distance. It gives special attention to including members’ families in Lodge life.

Charity Committee. Helps the Lodge turn its commitment to caring for others into support for Brothers, families, and neighbors in need.

History of Lillian Masonic Lodge

In April 1986, Sam McLendon, Ray Wiggins, and Bob Hearon began gathering local Masons around the idea of a Lodge in Lillian. Foley Lodge #766 sponsored the effort. The Grand Lodge instituted Lillian Lodge No. 925 Under Dispensation on February 20, 1987, and voted to issue its charter later that year.

Brothers and their families then helped build a permanent home. The “925 Support Group” formed in 1990, ground was broken that September, and the new Temple was officially recognized on April 21, 1992.
